Putting Exxon’s Water Requirements into Perspective

Exxon/SABIC will require 20 million gallons of water a day to operate, 25 million gallons per day during “peak” operations. That’s 7.3 Billion gallons (+) per year.

How much water is that, really? Consider this: The San Patricio County Municipal Water District supplies water to communities and industrial employers in San Patricio, Aransas and eastern Nueces counties. Industrial customers are located on or near the La Quinta Ship Channel. Other customers include municipal water systems in Odem, Taft, Portland, Gregory, Ingleside, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, Rockport and Fulton and two rural water supply corporations in central and eastern San Patricio County, all who in turn provide water to residents and businesses.

In short, the District provides virtually all the water for agricultural, residential, commercial, and industrial users in the area. According to the District, on average, ALL of these customers combined use between 19 and 20 million gallons of water per day. The District reported “audited figures” of 7.1 Billion gallons used by ALL customers in 2016.

Providing Exxon/SABIC with their daily water needs is the equivalent of providing the daily water needs of an additional 65,000 residents and businesses. Let that sink in.
